Insight has emerged on several changes made to the Brock Lesnar match during the recent Madison Square Garden WWE Live Event.
For majority of the build to the March 5 show, Lesnar’s appearance was billed as his final title defence before WrestleMania 38. The Beast ultimately defended his gold against Austin Theory at the house show.
Per Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Austin Theory was never a lock for the match, with WWE reportedly considering several other names. Also discussing changes made in the lead-up to that night’s Universal Title bout, Meltzer said:
“Bobby Lashley was never going to be there, and they knew that before the show. At first it was going to be Austin Theory, they thought it was better not to advertise that, it changed several times, it started as Austin Theory and finished as Austin Theory, but other names were thrown in there so it was never a lock.
“It was weird because again, they advertised Reigns vs Rollins and then all of a sudden the advertising it was pulled, so Reigns was going to wrestle a mystery guy, and it ended up being Seth Rollins, and you go like well why did they change the advertising, and the reason was because they bounced around other ideas including other people than Seth Rollins, but in the end they went with the guy they started with in Seth Rollins.”
