A backstage update has emerged on WWE’s plans for Raw and SmackDown, following speculation that the company plans to end the brand split.
At WrestleMania 38, Roman Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar to win the Winner Takes All WWE & Universal Championship Title Unification bout. SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos are now set to do battle with Raw Tag Team Champions RK-Bro in a Title Unification bout at WrestleMania Backlash on May 8.
Many have predicted that these unification bouts spell the end for the current brand split. After over 80 in-ring performers were let go by WWE in 2021, many fans speculated that WWE aimed to combine the Raw and SmackDown rosters once again.
Per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, nobody backstage has heard of any discussions about plans to merge the rosters. Meltzer noted that Vince McMahon could change his mind, or decide on something different ‘five minutes from now.’
The report also stated that Reigns is currently scheduled to headline WrestleMania Backlash, despite the company not committing to a program for the WWE Universal Champion on TV.
The current ‘Brand Extension’ commenced in July 2018, following the WWE Draft. In the years since, stars have swapped brands during Superstar Shakeups, and sometimes just for storyline reasons.
