AEW President Tony Khan has explained why he brought MJF back, following the star’s return at All Out.
In the opening match of the September 4 pay-per-view, a masked joker entrant won the Casino ladder match. Following CM Punk’s AEW World Title win in the main event, it was revealed that MJF was the joker, meaning that he has now earned a shot at Punk’s gold.
Prior to All Out, MJF hadn’t appeared on AEW TV since the June 1 edition of Dynamite, when he told Tony Khan to fire him in a promo that blurred the lines between work and shoot.
During the post show media scrum, Khan noted that he personally reached out to MJF about a return. Explaining why, Khan said:
“I’m the one who asked him to come back, because MJF’s a big star in this company, and this is one of the biggest events. A year ago, CM Punk debuted here, and I thought it was right for the fans.
“For the fans, I thought the best that would do as a company was bring MJF back.”
It is currently unclear when this CM Punk vs MJF title bout will take place. Khan refused to comment when asked if it will headline the September 21 ‘Grand Slam’ edition of Dynamite at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
It has been reported that following CM Punk’s appearance during the media scrum, there was a backstage altercation involving Punk, Ace Steel and several members of the Elite. For more details on this altercation, click here.
