UPDATE: Malakai Black has now been pulled from the September 9 Northeast Wrestling event. More at this link.
Amid the ongoing drama in All Elite Wrestling, there has been many rumours regarding the status of Malakai Black in the company, with rumours emerging last week that he had asked for his release.
While Black’s original request was denied, he seemed to wrap up with the company back at All Out, when he took the pinfall loss in the six-man tag team match, before hugging the rest of the House of Black and blowing a kiss to the crowd.
Per Fightful Select (subscription required), numerous AEW talent told Fightful that they’ve been told that Malakai Black is done with the company for the foreseeable future, with many saying that he got his release.
AEW sources claim that the release is “highly conditional”, which is rare for AEW, as they usually don’t release talent outside of disciplinary reasons, with release requests being dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Fightful was told by many in the company that Tony Khan wanted to keep Black, and hoped to see him as a part of the brand ‘for years to come.’
There were reportedly attempts to have conversations to “salvage the working relationship” which AEW believed to be “fruitful”, but Fightful were told that a meeting took place recently, in which it was decided that they should probably allow Black to leave if that’s what he wanted.
Talent are of the belief that there are “heavy restrictions” on Black, and there may be more to the agreement, such as conditions that would prevent him from wrestling elsewhere any time soon. According to PWInsider, Black withdrew from a September 9 indie show in Ohio.
AEW sources claimed that “the door isn’t closed” on a potential return for Black.
