WWE may not be up for sale, though the idea is one that has been a focus for investors since the Vince McMahon allegations surfaced.
There were previous reports that the company is seen as “a pretty small company” that may interest “larger entities that are looking for content.”
A recent report suggested that NBC Universal could be interested in purchasing WWE, especially with upcoming contract negotiations.
Now, a former WWE executive and current Hall of Famer has weighed in on the possibility that WWE could be sold.
Speaking to SEScoops, Eric Bischoff said:
“I’d say right now it’s more plausible to me that the WWE would sell because Vince McMahon is no longer, at least visibly in the picture.”
The issue of whether the company could be sold may very well be in the hands of McMahon, with Eric explaining:
“He is still in the picture as a majority shareholder, and guess what?
“He can still say no.
“It’s his company.
“It is possible even though Vince isn’t the CEO or chairman that Vince could step up and prevent a sale.”
Bischoff would balance up the benefits of Vince selling by looking at the business opportunity, concluding:
” I don’t know why he would do that at this stage of his life with the amount of money that would be involved.
“What is there to gain from impeding an acquisition like that?
“I don’t know, but I don’t know Vince McMahon.
“I don’t know if too many people do.
“It’s plausible.
“It makes sense, which is why people keep talking about it
“You can make a really strong story for an NBC, a Fox, or at one point Disney…but it makes sense.
“As long as it makes sense and people continue to project it, it’s probably going to happen.
“I don’t know though.”
Former WWE CEO Vince McMahon announced his retirement in late-July amid an investigation into ‘hush pact’ allegations.
It was recently reported that Vince McMahon was interested in a return to WWE, believing he’d ‘received bad advice from people close to him.’
