WWE has now issued a statement after imagery of Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp where over a million people were killed during the Holocaust, was shown in a WrestleMania 39 promo video.
During a video package for the Dominik Mysterio vs Rey Mysterio match, the image briefly flashed up on screen.
The incident has since been publicly condemned by Auschwitz Memorial, and WWE has responded.
In a statement to the Washington Post, a WWE spokesperson “apologized” and called the use of the imagery an “error”.
The statement said:
We had no knowledge of what was depicted. As soon as we learned, it was removed immediately.
Later airings of the package had the Auschwitz imagery edited out.
The fact that Auschwitz image was used to promote a WWE match is hard to call "an editing mistake". Exploiting the site that became a symbol of enormous human tragedy is shameless and insults the memory of all victims of Auschwitz.https://t.co/b4bbYgWPwj https://t.co/Xud4rbhEUS pic.twitter.com/tuJrzmK6mQ
