Update On Highly Touted WWE Signee’s Training Ahead Of Debut WWE

Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson has shared an update on his in-ring training, ahead of his eventual pro-wrestling debut.

When the Olympic-level amateur wrestler was signed to a WWE deal in September 2021, he was touted as a future star, and was even officially added to the Raw roster during that year’s WWE Draft.

Despite this, Steveson has yet to wrestle a WWE match, and has rarely appeared for WWE.

While Steveson has been training for pro-wrestling with Ken Anderson (Mr Kennedy), he recently returned to amateur wrestling, dominating the competition at the US Men’s Freestyle Open in Las Vegas, Nevada in late-April, ahead of potentially competing in the 2024 Olympic Games.

Steveson spoke about his potential WWE debut with KSTP, explaining what he has been learning while training for pro-wrestling:

“I want to go out there on tv. I want to be the person people thought I was and I don’t want any doubt in my mind that I’m not.

“I’m getting the hang of doing everything the correct way – landing right, match psychology, everything in between. I’m flourishing and hopefully they see it, too.

“I’m excited because people haven’t really seen the real Gable because amateur wrestling kind of shelves a portion because we’re used to guys being disciplined.”

Steveson noted that he believes that he’ll have to get approval from WWE to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games, noting:

“They’ve approved the fact that I can chase a couple tournaments. I think time will tell the Olympics story.

“Who knows because it’s a year away but I think we’re in good strides to make that progression.”

WWE has encouraged stars to go for Olympic gold in the past, with former NXT star Arturo Ruas previously noting that WWE allowed him to train for his 2016 Olympic Games tryouts while he was under contract with the company.

This weekend’s Night of Champions premium live event will be all about the gold, with five title matches slated for the show, including the main event for the new World Heavyweight Championship.

The card for WWE Night of Champions 2023 on Saturday, May 27 is as follows:

World Heavyweight Championship – Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins vs. AJ Styles

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship – Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn (c) vs. Roman Reigns & Solo Sikoa

Raw Women’s Championship – Bianca Belair (c) vs. Asuka

SmackDown Women’s Championship – Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Natalya

Intercontinental Championship – Gunther (c) vs. Mustafa Ali

Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar

Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus
