There has been a new update on the immediate WWE future of Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson, amid uncertainty over his status for the upcoming Wrestling World Championships.
While Steveson’s desire to continue to compete in amateur wrestling as well as professional has been no secret, there has been continued uncertainty whether WWE would in fact allow him to do so, given he’s under contract.
Writing in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer confirmed that Steveson is in fact listed on Team USA for the upcoming Wrestling World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, despite WWE not stating that he will or will not be competing.
Meltzer writes:
Regarding Gable Steveson and the world championships, he is still listed on the U.S. team.
His scheduled days of competition in Belgrade, Serbia are 9/16 and 9/17.
WWE has not stated whether he will or won’t be competing and they would have to give permission since he’s under contract to them.
Despite the uncertainty, Steveson has at the very least gotten his WWE debut match under his belt, competing against Baron Corbin at July 30’s NXT Great American Bash.
While expectations were high for the 23-year-old’s debut, the reception was rather mixed from both fans as well as a WWE legend currently working on the NXT brand.
NXT commentator Booker T shooed off comparisons between Steveson and WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle based on the Minnesota-native’s in-ring debut.
