WWE star Charlotte Flair has named her dream opponents for WrestleMania 40, noting that she’d love for Mercedes Mone to return for the event.
While Flair has had a number of serious rivals in WWE, one star who will always be associated with her is Mercedes Mone, formerly known as Sasha Banks.
With Mone winning the NXT Women’s Title from Flair in 2015, and the duo trading the Raw Women’s Championship back and forth in 2016, the duo’s rivalry played a key role in WWE establishing its ‘women’s revolution’.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Flair discussed the possibility of Mercedes Mone returning to WWE for a big match.
Believing that a Flair vs Mone match at WrestleMania 40 would be different from their previous encounters, Flair said:
“We’ll see what WrestleMania XL brings, but you know what’s crazy?
“Think of how much better we are now than we were then. We’ve both grown so much, you can’t even compare it to before.”
While Flair and Mone have never faced off in singles action at WrestleMania, the two stars were part of matches against one another at WrestleMania 32 and 33.
At the 2016 show, Flair defeated Mone and Becky Lynch to win the new WWE (Raw) Women’s Championship.
The 2017 event saw Bayley defeat Flair, Mone and Nia Jax in an elimination fatal fourway bout for the same title.
Mone left WWE in May 2022, and has since only wrestled for NJPW and STARDOM.
She’s currently recovering from an injury after breaking her ankle in a NJPW STRONG Women’s Title bout at the May 21 NJPW Resurgence show.
IYO SKY currently holds the WWE Women’s Championship, after cashing in her Money in the Bank contract on Bianca Belair who had just won the title in a threeway bout against Flair and Asuka at SummerSlam.
