Jinder Mahal has revealed that he was not originally scheduled to compete in a big WWE match; only being added to the card at his own request.
After a particularly quiet 2023, The Modern Day Maharaja has become one of WWE’s most talked about stars of 2024.
In just two weeks Mahal has: shared the ring with The Rock on the Day 1 edition of Monday Night Raw; been booked for a massive World Heavyweight Championship match with Seth Rollins, and of course been the subject of some choice tweets from AEW president Tony Khan.
While Mahal is looking to ride this wave of momentum into the Road to WrestleMania, his fortunes just a few months ago were far different.
In September, WWE held the Superstar Spectacle event from Hyderabad, India, an event which featured Mahal teaming with Indus Sher (Sanga & Veer) to take on Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens and Drew McIntyre.
However, as revealed by Mahal in a recent Instagram live conversation with WWE India, original plans had Mahal sitting on the sidelines and not competing.
He explained:
“The return to Hyderabad (for WWE Superstar Spectacle) this year was spectacular.
“At first, I wasn’t supposed to have a match. But, I asked for it.
“I knew that this was gonna be a special event that the Modern Day Maharaja has to compete in the ring so, we made it happen and what a way to top it off by doing Naatu Naatu (dance).”
With Mahal set for arguably his biggest match in WWE since 2017 on tonight’s Raw (January 15), the former WWE Champion sent a final message on social media, promising a massive celebration after his victory over Rollins.
