3. Randy Orton vs. John Cena – Breaking Point 2009
John Cena and Randy Orton wrestled many times over the years. Some might say they wrestled too much. While they had more matches together than I care to count, one stood head and shoulders above the others. That was their I Quit match at Breaking Point in 2009.
This was before Cena had really gotten behind his “Never Give Up” character so there was proper drama in this match as it seemed possible that he could quit. The whole match revolved around Randy Orton having Cena handcuffed and tortured around the ring until Cena was able to get the key.
People called Orton the greatest wrestler in the world for this night and with the performance he put on it is hard to argue that point.
2. Randy Orton vs. Christian – Over The Limit 2011
One of the most underrated matches in the last decade of WWE is Randy Orton vs. Christian from Over the Limit 2011. Over the Limit was always an unimportant pay per view and thus little emphasis was put in remembering things that happened on it. The biggest problem with that is sometimes you get matches like this.
This match should be considered a classic but it has largely been forgotten. As mentioned earlier, Christian and Orton had tremendous chemistry and this was their first pay per view singles match. They managed to grapple and keep the fans interested despite both being babyfaces. The RKO was already one of the best finishers in WWE at this point and it was quick finishes like this one that helped make it so.
This could have been the top spot on this list as it is a match that more people need to watch.
1. Randy Orton vs. Mick Foley – Backlash 2004
It is difficult to argue against this one for the top spot. Randy Orton was a rising star in 2004 but it was this match that earned the respect of the fans. It is one thing to be a good-looking, talented, young star. It is another to be seen as tough. Orton’s match with Mick Foley at Backlash was the match that made him tough.
This was as hardcore of a match as WWE had ever had in their relatively clean history. Foley has called this match the best of his career and if you have read his books you know how much thought he put into it. There was barbed-wire, thumbtacks, more barbed-wire, a crazy stage dive, and even more barbed wire.
Orton really benefitted from being the one who took the slam into the thumbtacks in this match. It changed the perception of him in the eyes of the fans and for that reason it is the most must-see match from his long career.
