10 ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin Matches You MUST Watch

7. Steve Austin vs. The Rock – Backlash 1999

We have mentioned before how Steve Austin and The Rock’s match at Backlash 1999 topped their match from WrestleMania XV the month earlier. This was one of the best matches the two had together in their careers and it remains one of the best Backlash matches ever.

Austin was going through a divorce and wasn’t in the proper mindset for their WrestleMania match but he brought everything for their rematch. This had all the McMahon interference but it helped make the match feel more chaotic. This is the vibe of the Attitude Era exemplified and it is the Attitude Era at its best.

6. Steve Austin vs. Triple H – No Way Out 2001

Say what you will about Triple H, but he knows how to have a brawl. He and Austin always had a good fight and this was their very best. Steve Austin was on his way to WrestleMania after winning the Royal Rumble but first, he had to deal with The Game.

This was a Three Stages of Hell match and one of the best matches either man ever had. Austin managed to win the first fall which was a straight wrestling match before Triple H evened the score in a Street Fight. Finally, the two had a cage match. This was incredibly violent as Austin used a barbed wire board to counter Triple H’s sledgehammer. This is the kind of match where Triple H really shines but it still inconceivable that he defeated Austin in this match.

5. Steve Austin & Triple H vs. Chris Jericho & Chris Benoit – Raw (May 21, 2001)

This match is primarily remembered for being when Triple H tore his quad for the first time. However, it should also be remembered as one of the best matches in WWE history and maybe the best Raw match ever.

Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit were ridiculously over and the fans desperately wanted to see win the tag team titles. This was another match in the middle of Austin’s heel run and lucky for him people loved Jericho and Benoit so much. If they hadn’t, Austin likely wouldn’t have been booed as much as he was. That being said, this was a classic match. It doesn’t get shown because of Benoit’s involvement but if you want to see a blowaway tag team match, you need to seek this one out.

4. Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart – Survivor Series 1996

Steve Austin’s star was rising fast in 1996. What really put him over the top was his rivalry with Bret Hart. Their WrestleMania match is regarded as one of the best WWE matches ever (don’t worry, we’ll get to that) but their first clash at Survivor Series is nearly as good.

It was clear Austin was a top talent but he had yet to have a classic match in WWE. Such was the way of the time as WWE’s undercard in the mid-90s was subpar. Given his first chance with a legend like Bret Hart and Austin hit a home run. Their Survivor Series match mixed technical prowess with intense brawling as these two had the best WWE match of the year. This was the appetizer and the main course was coming.
