3. Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle – SummerSlam 2001

Steve Austin’s heel run peaked at SummerSlam 2001. His match with Kurt Angle was the best match of his heel run and it was also featured one of the best DQ finishes ever. Needless to say, Austin wasn’t going to let his WWE Championship go easily.

Austin beat Angle bloody. He beat him mercilessly and at no point was he able to keep Angle down. It seemed that Austin had the match won, but Angle would not be beaten. When Angle began to fire up, Austin desperately got himself disqualified to keep his title. This was not the cheap finish we see on every show nowadays because creative can’t come up with a better idea. This made perfect sense for the storyline and the story of the match. If you want to see a DQ done right, check out this match.

The peak and climax of the Attitude Era was WrestleMania X-Seven. It was a perfect way to cap off WWE’s hottest period as the show was main evented by their two biggest stars. Steve Austin and The Rock. This time, the two were equal in star power. With Austin having taken a year off to recover from neck surgery, Rock’s popularity soared. Now, the two were on a collision course.

Austin wanted the WWE Championship back more than anything and he proved it in this match. He wanted it back so badly that he was willing to align himself with Vince McMahon. The decision was a costly one for WWE but it made this match that much more memorable. As it stands, this is one of the best WrestleMania main events ever.

1. Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart – WrestleMania 13

Told you we would get here. There is perhaps no match more important to Steve Austin’s career than his match with Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13. The two hated each other and the two were scheduled for a Submission match to settle the score. While their Survivor Series match was excellent, this match stepped it up a notch.

You could make the argument this is the best match in WWE history. On top of the excellent brawling and drama, this match had one of the best finishes ever. With Austin locked in the Sharpshooter, covered in blood, he does not submit. Rather he passes out. Austin’s popularity was growing anyway but this match showed just how badass he was. This is likely the most famous double-turns in history definitely the most important.
