AEW
Two top stars in AEW, Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega are active members of the roster, but what could their retirement look like?
For Chris Jericho, he has previously indicated that retirement isn’t in his near future, although fans have previously been vocal on the subject with their chants.
Late last year, Kenny Omega revealed he had been “thinking a lot” about retiring as an in-ring competitor, although he continues to compete regularly, recently losing the AEW World Championship to Will Ospreay at All In: London.
Retirement will eventually come to both stars, and there is an opportunity for AEW to make it a final match to remember:
Chris Jericho
During his time in AEW, Chris Jericho has arguably elevated a number of stars, be it through a rivalry or alliance, with MJF being one such name to reach new heights from his already lofty position.
The feud between Chris Jericho and MJF covered a multitude of bases when it came to entertaining, including a musical number. While that might be something to revisit, the idea of bringing the two together, with Jericho as the timeless veteran and MJF as the star who will replace him for decades to come.
Very much like Jericho, MJF has evolved over time and will continue to do so, without losing the very elements that have made him a fan favorite in AEW.
Kenny Omega
There’s only one name that should bring an end to Kenny Omega’s in-ring career and that has to be Will Ospreay.
A rivalry going back to 2015, Omega and Ospreay would bring their talents to NJPW, with their rivalry turning bitter at various points, and championships changing hands along the way.
Omega may be the veteran, but he has seen Ospreay evolve as a star, punctuating that growth with some of the most well-regarded matches in their respective careers.
Tony Khan likely plans to return to the well when it comes to Ospreay and Omega in the future, knowing that there are still depths to what they can do together and “one more match” at a major pay-per-view would be the ideal way to send the AEW OG off into the sunset.
The Journey To The End
For either Omega or Jericho, it’s unlikely that their retirement will “just happen”, with one final match announced for an AEW pay-per-view.
In the run-up to his final match at AEW Revolution in March 2024, Sting would undertake a retirement storyline that would see Ric Flair back in the fold, among other points. Over in WWE, John Cena would also have his own retirement tour throughout last year, before hanging up his boots at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December.
The retirement tour isn’t a new concept, but it is one that rightly celebrates the career of the veterans involved, revisiting old rivalries, elevating newer talent, and leaving a lasting memory for fans around the world.
