Roman Reigns, Rey Mysterio & AJ Lee: What will their WWE retirement matches be?

Roman Reigns, Rey Mysterio & AJ Lee may be current members of the WWE roster, but that can’t last forever, with all three eyeing retirement.

Of the trio, Rey Mysterio is the closest to a full-time star, splitting his duties between Raw and AAA, being the general manager of the Mexico-based brand.

For Mysterio and Reigns, both have touched on the possibility of retiring in the future, while Lee has been absent since WrestleMania 42 in April of this year.

With all three no doubt contemplating what their in-ring future could look like, let’s fast forward to their respective retirement matches:

Roman Reigns

Arguably the most dominant star on the current WWE roster, even with his part-time status, Roman Reigns is the mountain that many contenders need to climb.

In comments made earlier this year, Reigns said he was “almost there, but not quite” when it comes to the end of his in-ring career.

Signed to WWE since 2010, there’s plenty of options for a final match when it comes to Roman Reigns, although it’s difficult to not see the star getting the John Cena retirement tour treatment, revisiting old rivalries and engaging newer stars.

The final match, however, should be a passing of the torch between Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu, both members of The Bloodline and both having proved that they can deliver a bitter, brutal affair, wherever it takes place.

Rey Mysterio

A WWE Hall of Famer and still a full-time member of the roster, Rey Mysterio has recently indicated that he wants to see Dominik Mysterio and Aalyah Gutierrez in the ring to call time on his career.

Gutierrez is now signed to a WWE developmental deal, while Dominik Mysterio continues to be a thorn in his legendary father’s side. While his daughter’s career is only getting started, there is every opportunity that, by the time Rey Mysterio decides it’s time to hang up his boots, she will be ready to go, and Dominik will no doubt be there to send him off into the sunset.

AJ Lee

Speaking to Mind Over Mountain, AJ Lee would say that she is “story-driven” when it comes to what she does in WWE, going to on to say that “if there’s a story there, that’s gonna be the thing that excites me.”

There are plenty of stories that could be told with AJ Lee on the current WWE roster, particularly when it comes to a final match.

Clearly, Paige is a possibility, with the former NXT Women’s Champion defeating Lee upon her Raw debut the night after WrestleMania 30 in April 2014.

In the aforementioned interview, Lee would state that she’s seeking opportunities that feel “like something new that I haven’t done and feels like breaking ground”, which may rule out Paige as an opponent, but doesn’t rule out a program that sees her face newer stars, similar to the John Cena retirement run pitched for Reigns.

For Whom The Bell Tolls

Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles were all retired by GUNTHER, with quite the build-up to the final matches for all three stars.

It’s unlikely every top star will get the year-long retirement tour that John Cena enjoyed, but the opportunity is there to deliver a high-profile program to bring a career to an end as opposed to it just happening.

For some stars, going quietly into the night is what they may want to do, but in the case of Reigns, Mysterio and AJ Lee it’s likely to be something that WWE want to shout from the rooftops, knowing that the interest is there to bring in fans, new and old, to see the moment.
