Next WWE Tag Team Champions after The MFTs: Three teams who could dethrone Tama Tonga & Talla Tonga

Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga currently hold the WWE Tag Team Championship, with The MFTs winning the gold on the August 14 SmackDown episode.

A month into their title reign, there are several teams who look like they could threaten the Tonga duo’s championship run.

From former champions to recent signees, any of these teams could be the tandem that ultimately dethrones The MFTs in the coming weeks or months.

Here are three teams which could become WWE Tag Team Champions after The MFTs.

Bakusai

Bakusai are the most immediate threat to the MFTs reign, with Shinsuke Nakamura bringing in Kyoki (Hiromu Takahashi) with the specific purpose of taking down Tama and Talla Tonga.

The two teams did face off on the September 18 SmackDown episode, with the match ending via disqualification following Haku’s interference.

While the segment ended with the MFTs standing tall, this only further gives Nakamura and Kyoki motivation to dethrone the champions, perhaps bringing an enforcer of their own to combat the number’s game.

With Kyoki having only wrestled four times for WWE including dark matches, there might not be many more matches before he is crowned a WWE Tag Team Champion.

War Raiders

The War Raiders were part of the match which saw the MFTs capture the WWE Tag Team Championship, with Tama and Talla Tonga defeating Erik & Ivar, and former champs Damian Priest & R-Truth in three-way tag-team action on August 14.

With Erik and Ivar not involved with the final fall – with Tama Tonga pinning R-Truth to win the gold – we could see the War Raiders target the MFTs and call for the title to be on the line in a two on two bout.

Erik & Ivar also defeated former champions Damian Priest & R-Truth on September 11 in their final successful AAA World Tag Team Championship defense, giving them even more of a reason to go after the WWE Tag Team Title.

With the War Raiders dropping the AAA World Tag Team gold to El Hijo de Dr Wagner Jr and Galeno at Triplemanía 34, now seems like the perfect time for the vikings to make their presence known on the blue brand again.

Trick Williams & Lil Yachty

This seems like a rogue choice, but a Trick Williams tag-team would make a lot of sense for Lil Yachty, following his recent pro-wrestling debut.

Lil Yachty wrestled his first-ever match at Sunday Night’s Main Event, surviving five minutes with Baron Corbin to earn Trick Williams a US Championship match, which Williams ultimately won.

With Williams helping to train Yachty in the ring, and with the duo currently being aligned on WWE programming, we’re bound to see the duo share the ring in tag-team action sooner or later.

With there being a lot of uncertainty surrounding Yachty’s next in-ring outing, and Yachty busy touring in the last few months of 2026, a brief reign with the WWE Tag Team Championship on the road to WrestleMania 43 would certainly make headlines.
