6. KUSHIDA vs. Bronson Reed vs. Cameron Grimes vs. Timothy Thatcher vs. Kyle O’Reilly in a Gauntlet Eliminator Match to determine the #1 Contender for the NXT Championship – WWE NXT 9/23/20
Five competitors were chosen for the first Gauntlet Eliminator to determine the #1 contender for the NXT Championship at TakeOver 31.
This bout started off hot with KUSHIDA and Kyle O’Reilly going at it in a callback to their excellent Best of Super Juniors Finals match in NJPW.
After a superb technical wrestling display from those two, Bronson Reed entered the fray.
KUSHIDA was eliminated soon after following interference from Velveteen Dream and the Tsunami from Reed.
Timothy Thatcher entered next before Cameron Grimes was the last man to enter.
O’Reilly connected with a running knee to Bronson after missing the Tsunami to eliminate the big man. Kyle and Thatcher traded ankle locks right after that elimination.
Following some fun three-way sequences, O’Reilly eliminated Thatcher with a roll-up. Grimes caught Kyle with the Cave In, but O’Reilly got his foot on the ropes.
The two final competitors traded strikes before O’Reilly caught Grimes in a kneebar to finally eliminate him and win the contest. This put a spotlight on all the stars involved and delivered a great main event.
