WWE
Fans would be forgiven for thinking that Dominik Mysterio in AAA is a different star from the one they see on the regular in WWE.
A member of Judgment Day on WWE Raw, he can also be seen in Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide as a member of El Ojo.
Both factions are very much on the heel side of the equation, but with very different presentations that have left Mysterio with something of a split persona:
Judgment Day
There’s been a fundamental shift in Judgment Day since its post-Edge era, with the departure of Rhea Ripley and Damian Priest after SummerSlam in 2024 seeming to mark the transformation from an imposing faction that occasionally dabbles with comedy into a comedy faction that occasionally remembers to be imposing.
Across both eras, since joining Judgment Day in September 2022, Dominik Mysterio has been a constant and, arguably, a standout star.
The contrast between his role in Judgment Day is perhaps exemplified by comparing 2024 to this year. In 2024, the star betrayed Rhea Ripley to side with Liv Morgan in a shock moment, while this year saw him compete in a Human Monies on a Pole match against Danhausen.
Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide
A former AAA Mega Champion and a current member of El Ojo, Dominik Mysterio is an entirely different character, while still being a heel, in Mexico.
Having lost the AAA Mega Championship to El Grande Americano, Mysterio is now set to challenge for it again thanks to a victory for his tag team with Omos over the current champion and Rey Mysterio. Post-match, Dominik Mysterio held his father’s mask and the AAA Mega Championship aloft, eliciting exactly the reaction you’d expect from the fans in attendance.
The King of the Luchadores lies, cheats and steals his way to everything he wants to achieve and appears to be having the time of his life while doing it.
The frustration
Back in August of this year, it was reported that Dominik Mysterio was “frustrated” with his main roster booking, with an unnamed source noting that the star believed he should be booked in a more serious manner.
It’s not difficult to see why he feels this way, given his ability to deliver on those serious moments during his time pre-SummerSlam 2024 run in Judgment Day. His feud with his father, his relationship with Ripley, his desire to prove himself: it all built a talent that had grown immeasurably since his introduction as an in-ring star.
This isn’t to say that Mysterio hasn’t embraced a lighter side to his character, but much of that humor came from him trying to prove that he is a man. From his time in “prison” to the awkwardness of handling Roxanne Perez during the absence of Liv Morgan, Mysterio navigating all this has proved that he can deliver on comedy as well as serious storytelling, if WWE creative can find the right balance.
