Proving that the top spot is ready for the taking in NXT, Grayson Waller could expand his dominance with members of the main WWE roster.
Grayson Waller returned to NXT on July 28, declaring his recent run on the main roster to be an “embarrassment” while also calling the men’s roster of the Tuesday night show “soft”.
With Heatwave seeing Grayson Waller become NXT Champion, he now has a target on his back, with Cruz Montana, Zilla Fatu and the former champion Tony D’Angelo no doubt seeing gold in their future.
For Waller, however, perhaps the time has now come for the star to show just how much separates the men’s main roster from NXT by bringing in some reinforcements of his own.
Johnny Gargano
For far too long, Johnny Gargano has been laying down as he contemplates his future, with CM Punk reawakening the star by offering an Undisputed WWE Championship match on the August 28 episode of SmackDown. Punk would retain, but hopefully fans will get to see more from Gargano in the future.
A SmackDown star, his last NXT match took place at Stand & Deliver and saw Gargano challenge Myles Borne for the North American Championship.
There’s mileage in having Gargano shift back to NXT for a run, allowing up-and-coming stars to step into the ring with a veteran performer and having that happen under the auspices of a Waller-led faction would be a way to freshen up the main roster star, particularly with the prestige of being a three-time North American Champion and former NXT Champion.
Rusev
Every faction needs a steamroller, and Rusev fits that description well.
Rusev was last seen on NXT back in 2014, although he would compete on non-televised house shows last year, seeing two losses to Ricky Saints and one to the team of Hank Walker, Tank Ledger & Oba Femi.
Deploying Rusev in that “unstoppable object” role would allow NXT to discover their next “immovable object”, having seen Oba Femi receive his call-up earlier this year.
Dominik Mysterio
With reports that Dominik Mysterio is frustrated with his main roster booking, particularly given his presentation over in AAA, there’s an argument to be made that he’s done everything he can with Judgment Day and needs something new.
A two-time NXT North American Champion, the star could make a return to the brand in order to revitalize what he can bring to the main roster, as long as he can leave Judgment Day behind. A few weeks or months away from Raw could be refresh that he needs to be reintroduced as the top star that he will no doubt become.
The Street Profits
Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford are both products of NXT who have since found success on the main roster.
With former WWE SmackDown head writer Road Dogg praising the pair, described Ford as a “superstar” and Dawkins as “the unsung hero“, there’s plenty for the pair to do over in NXT to show the men’s roster how they became so highly regarded.
Their second World Tag Team Championship reign came to an end after just fourteen days on July 6. While it’s difficult to imagine a future where The Street Profits don’t capture a third World Tag Team Championship or WWE Tag Team Championship, a return to NXT could see them elevate the brand’s tag title, adding to their past reign.
Dawkins and his real-life wife recently welcomed their third child to the family, so an absence is likely for the star.
Numbers For The Sake Of Numbers
Assuming a faction does come to fruition, ideally a plan should exist whereby stars adding to the collective serve a purpose in raising the profile of the current crop of NXT names without diminishing their own persona.
There are plenty of stars on the main roster who could be freshened up with a run in NXT or see more screen time thanks to such a run, and Waller would be the perfect leader to add legitimacy, particularly with his comments about the men’s roster in his new home.
