AEW name and WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has revealed that he is to undergo brain surgery in the near future.
Having recently left the hospital after an extended stay, Ross spoke about his health and the need to undergo surgery on Grillin’ JR, saying:
“I’m getting ready to have another surgery, brain surgery this time. That’s going to be an adventure, because I don’t think they’re going to find much in my brain!
“I’ll be in the hospital for a few days. Hopefully nothing will go wrong. I’ve got a great surgeon. I had to go today to a cardiologist, a heart doctor, to talk to him about this upcoming procedure. He had to approve it, or they wouldn’t do it. He did, and they’re going to do it soon. I don’t have a confirmed date set, but it’s going to be in the next week or so, that’s what I’m pushing for.
“It’s just an illness, and I’ve got to get it addressed. I couldn’t live my life the way it was, you know? I’d forget s**t, and I just couldn’t remember things, it was horrible, I felt horrible. But it all started with me passing out in my house and being discovered there, which began an almost 40-day hospital stay.
2Anyhow, this procedure that I’m getting ready to have done, I think it’s called a shunt… To get that fluid off my brain that’s not making me remember stuff. It’s fairly serious.
“I’ll get it done, a short hospital stay, then back home to heal up. That’s what I’m going to do, I’m going to heal up.”

According to John Hopkins Medicine, a shunt is a hollow tube that is “surgically placed in the brain (or occasionally in the spine) to help drain cerebrospinal fluid and redirect it to another location in the body where it can be reabsorbed.”
Shunt surgery is a procedure primarily utilized to treat hydrocephalus; excess fluid in the brain.
More details on shunt surgery, courtesy of the NHS website:
“During shunt surgery, a thin tube called a shunt is implanted in your brain. The excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain flows through the shunt to another part of your body, usually your tummy. From here, it’s absorbed into your blood.
Inside the shunt there’s a valve that controls the flow of CSF, so it does not drain too quickly. You can feel the valve as a lump under the skin on your scalp.”
Since late May, Ross was in hospital for what would become a forty-day stay, and revealed that he had a ‘phone visit‘ from fellow WWE Hall of Famer, Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Ross has been signed to AEW since April 2019, having parted ways with WWE a month prior, opting to not renew his contract with his former home promotion.
WrestleTalk wishes Jim Ross well in his brain surgery and recovery.
