Real Reason Mark Henry Left WWE & Joined AEW AEW

Mark Henry has revealed the reason behind his decision to leave WWE after twenty-five years, joining AEW in May 2021.

Despite being a former WWE European and World Heavyweight Champion and being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018, the veteran revealed his reason for leaving WWE in a recent interview.

Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Mark Henry discussed his hopes to transition to a behind-the-scenes role in WWE, revealing:

“But from a business standpoint, I wanted a position in the office because I didn’t want to wrestle anymore, and they wouldn’t hire me.

“I didn’t have experience on the corporate side, or the business side, or the executive side, or however you want to phrase it … I was not given that opportunity.”

It was the lack of being extended an opportunity to develop into a role that led to Mark Henry leaving the company and heading to AEW.

Under Tony Khan’s leadership, Henry has been both a commentator and a coach with the World’s Strongest Man noting that two of his strengths are his ability to spot talent and think outside of the box.

Speaking of what he sees as his god-given talents, Henry went on to say:

“What people didn’t know is God gave me vision, and I can see where a wrestler can make it or not and there are people not even in the wrestling business and that I see them and I go ‘Wow, they would be a great wrestler.'”

In the interview, Henry would also discuss how his move to AEW and an executive role came about from a discussion with Tony Khan and described how his coaching role works to nurture talent.
