Things are about to get interesting.
According to the good folks at the ever-reliable WrestleVotes, AEW have made an offer, described as “outstanding”, to a current member of the WWE roster.
WrestleVotes note that the superstar in question – who was not named – is a “big time WWE superstar” and that the offer is “too good to turn down”.
Cue the speculation machine!
The first name that springs to mind here is obviously AJ Styles, who recently said he had not signed a new contract with the promotion. His deal is widely-believed to expire in April.
Perhaps coincidentally, Styles is currently on the shelf with a reported hernia and may have to undergo surgery. Could that be a cover up to take him off television because he has not signed a new contract and has potentially told WWE officials that he is leaving? It should be noted that this is pure speculation.
The other names that spring to mind are Ronda Rousey and Brock Lesnar.
There are conflicting reports over the size of the contract Rousey signed with WWE, with some claiming it to be one year and others three years. Lesnar, on the other hand, is expected to be finished with the promotion when his latest short-term deal ends in April. Paul Heyman is apparently negotiating with three parties on his behalf, those being WWE, UFC and AEW. Again, this is speculation only.
There were further hints that something major is in the works for AEW on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, with Dave Meltzer noting that in addition to Kenny Omega there would be other “major surprises” at Thursday’s ticket announcement part and that it was about to get “very interesting”.
Stay tuned to see how all of this develops in the coming days and weeks. This modern day wrestling war gets more and more intriguing by the minute!
