CM Punk has commented after successfully defending his Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens in last night’s SmackDown main event in Toronto.
In what was their first-ever in-ring meeting, the Friday August 21 episode of SmackDown was headlined by a grudge match 20 years in the making, as CM Punk defended his Undisputed WWE Title against Kevin Owens.
With the match taking place in Owens’ home country of Canada, and Owens being fresh off his return from a career-threatening neck injury, the challenger was the firm fan favorite, and while their were some chants for CM Punk, ‘The Best in the World’ wholeheartedly embraced his role as the villain.
Owens and Punk delivered on the excitement surrounding the bout, however, it’s finish was not well received by the Toronto crowd, as Sami Zayn interfered while referee Dan Engler was down and played a crucial role in Punk retaining his title.
Despite this being the way things played out, it was Owens who Zayn was attempting to help win initially, however, when KO refused to use the Undisputed WWE Title as a weapon on Punk, Zayn clocked his best friend with the gold, which then allowed Punk to deliver a GTS for the win.
Zayn would then lay out Punk with the WWE Title after the bell, as well as give Owens another shot for good measure. Unsurprisingly, Zayn was captured by WWE cameras after the match being serenaded by loud “Sami Sucks” chants from his fellow Canadians.
But what did CM Punk have to say after walking out of Toronto still in possession of his Undisputed WWE Championship? Well, despite being showered with boos from the majority of the fans inside the Scotiabank Arena, Punk only had messages of appreciation for the fans of Toronto on social media.
Taking to Instagram, Punk shared a picture of himself holding the Undisputed WWE Title in front of Toronto’s CN Tower – which is lit up in the famous pink and black of Canadian wrestling icon Bret Hart.
Along with the image, Punk wrote:
Thank you, Toronto! #andstill
Then, in another post on his IG Stories, Punk sent another appreciative message to the fans of Toronto, before. challenging those in Edmonton – the destination of tonight’s WWE live event – to match their energy.
Punk wrote:
Toronto, I appreciate all the love. You were GORGEOUS.
Edmonton on deck. Y’all have some big shoes to fill!
(I know you can do it. Get ready, ’cause you’re going!)
With Zayn standing tall with the Undisputed WWE Title over Punk and Owens as SmackDown went off the air, it appears as if he could have now forced his way to becoming Punk’s next challenger for the gold.
However, he’s far from the only star that is vying for that same spot, as SmackDown also saw Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, GUNTHER and Finn Balor make their intentions clear that they too are after WWE’s most prestigious prize.
