John Cena has explained how he came up with his trademark “You Can’t See Me” catchphrase and taunt in WWE.
Cena makes his final ever Raw appearance tonight at Raw in Madison Square Garden, and appeared on ESPN’s First Take to preview the show.
On First Take, he was asked where his famous “You Can’t See Me” gesture came from. He replied:
“It is my life dude – a happy accident. Off air, you asked me how I got the song – happy accident.
“This, when we played my little brother Sean the album, he was doing this (the You Can’t See Me taunt/dance), and I’m like, ‘Man, you look stupid.’
“He’s like, ‘Yo, I bet you won’t do that on TV.’
“I was wrestling in matches that no-one cared about. I was on an obscure Saturday program called Velocity. No-one ever watched it, so I’m like, ‘Oh fine, nobody’s watching – you guys can’t see me.’
“It stuck, and here I am, the invisible man 23 years later. Whole thing’s a happy accident. I’m not even supposed to be here.”
