A WWE backstage update has emerged surrounding John Cena’s upcoming announcement at Saturday’s Backlash premium live event.

John Cena confirmed earlier this week that he will make a major announcement which will “shock the very foundation of WWE.”

There has been a lot of speculation about what the 17-time world champion‘s announcement will be, with many believing it has been hyped up too much to simply be a Club WWE-related offering.

WrestleVotes now reports that there was some “internal hope” backstage at SmackDown on Friday (May 8) that the announcement will be something more than anything Club WWE-related.

The report did note, however, that a source has indicated that if it is to do with anything not related to Club WWE, it has been kept very quiet backstage.

Backstage at SmackDown last night, there was some internal hope that tonight’s “historic” announcement from John Cena goes beyond anything Club WWE related.

That said, according to one source, if that’s the direction, it’s been kept very quiet behind the scenes.

WWE officially announced the Club WWE membership program on April 14, with fans currently able to register their interest online.

Some of the benefits previously announced for the Club WWE gold membership include exclusive 24 hour ticket presale access to all WWE events, exclusive meet-and-greets and hospitality perks at featured events, and bonus WWE content.

John Cena has publicly stated that Club WWE is his next project and his way of staying connected with the company post-retirement, so in that way, it would make sense for Cena’s announcement to be about the program.

If it is solely a Club WWE push, some fans could be disappointed, as Cena himself has promised that this announcement will shock the company’s foundation, something which an already-announced program would struggle to do.

Despite retiring from in-ring competition in December, Backlash will mark the third WWE appearance of John Cena in the past month, following him hosting both nights of WrestleMania 42.
