Roman Reigns retained the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu in the main event of WWE Backlash 2026 tonight.

Despite Fatu employing the Tongan Death Grip that he’s utilized in recent weeks, Reigns managed to survive and fight out of it to land a Spear for the win.

Notably after the match, Reigns was in far worse of a condition than Fatu who attacked Reigns as well as the referee and producers.

The show went off the air with Fatu standing tall over Reigns with the World Title, despite Reigns retaining.

Reigns now heads into WWE Clash In Paris on May 31 for his next match still as the World Heavyweight Champion.

Who Is Next For Roman Reigns Following Jacob Fatu Victory?

With Roman Reigns’ first World Heavyweight Championship defence in the books, and Roman promising to be active throughout the Summer, there are many different directions to take is title reign following tonight’s show.

The first is to keep the ongoing chapter of the Bloodline saga going, with a rematch against Jacob at the upcoming Clash In Italy show, or even a potential match against Royce Keys, who has been allied with Jacob on SmackDown in recent weeks, which would be a major spot to put Keys in just weeks into his official WWE career.

After winning the title, it was reported that a planned match between Roman Reigns and Gunther would be taking place, which no longer seems to be the plan, with Gunther now moving over to the SmackDown brand to challenge Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship at Clash In Italy.

Oba Femi called out Reigns on the post-show of WrestleMania 42, with Roman telling him to ‘see how he gets on over the Summer’, which would obviously lean towards a marquee showdown between the two at SummerSlam.
