Layla has shared her honest thoughts on the Mickie James “Piggy James” angle, explaining why she is glad that storyline happened.
The “Piggy James” storyline is one of the most infamous in WWE women’s wrestling history, with Michelle McCool and Layla mocking Mickie James throughout their rivalry in 2009 and early 2010.
The duo would make repeated references to James’ weight, with the duo also mocking James with pig costumes and photos editing James to look like a pig.
Speaking with Insight on Chris Van Vliet, Layla stated that she was shocked when first hearing about the plans, but pointed out that it was an opportunity for the female wrestlers to have a storyline which was given a substantial amount of time.
She explained:
“When we were taught about the first, like, pre-tape, and then the actual segment, I was kind of shocked, to be honest with you. I was surprised, but at the same time, I was also like, oh wow, at least they’re investing in a diva segment.
“So they’re giving us some time, and they were giving us a storyline that meant a lot, regardless of what the storyline was, they were actually giving the girls a storyline. So I was grateful, but also kind of looking at Mickie, is she okay with this?”
Stating that the silver lining was that it was the first time the Divas had real heat, Layla continued:
“You got to remember, I think, especially in that time, in that era, it was like women, we were always made fun of. Our weight was so important to us, and there were certain things that we could get away with in that era that you could ever get away with now.
“So I think it was a very touchy story to some people, but I’m very glad that it happened, because it was the first time ever that divas got heat. They wanted to beat us up at live events, like literal women wanted to beat us up, like they really believed that we were, you know, and not only that, I think that, like, Mickey did amazing.
“That storyline, if you look at it, it was great, it was the first time the Divas section, especially on Smackdown, we had something.”
Thankfully Layla is right about this being a different era, with the women’s division given a lot more time for legitimate rivalries nowadays.
Layla is happy about this evolution, which she commented on a recent interview where she stated that Chelsea Green, Charlotte Flair, Rhea Ripley, Becky Lynch and Naomi are among the names who have caught her eye.
With Charlotte Flair being the last Divas Champion before it was replaced with the Raw Women’s Championship, Flair has shared her honest thoughts on controversy surrounding the former title.
