NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 Sets A New Audience Record NJPW

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom was the first show where current WWE and AEW stars performed on the same show for a different company.

With AEW’s Kenny Omega taking on Will Ospreay, WWE’s Karl Anderson facing Tama Tonga, a much-rumored appearance by the former Sasha Banks and more, it was a show that had attracted interest from all manner of wrestling fans.

That interest has translated into a record-breaking evening of wrestling action for New Japan.

As reported on the official NJPW website (in English):

“January 4 at the Tokyo Dome, a passionate crowd of 26,085 attended Wrestle Kingdom 17.

With fan anticipation at a peak for our double main event of Kenny Omega versus Will Ospreay, and Jay White versus Kazuchika Okada, as well as the long-anticipated appearance of Mercedes Moné, huge numbers tuned in from around the world as well.

“In fact 92,409 unique users were watching WK17 live, with 30% braving late nights and early mornings on a weekday to watch the English feed live from overseas.

“That’s a record for the NJPW World service since its inception in 2014, and we thank all our new, returning and consistent users very, very much!”

With the bitter rivalry between Ospreay and Omega being one of the two main event matches of the show, the other would see Jay White take on Kazuchika Okada.

The show also featured KAIRI’s first defense of the IWGP Women’s Championship against Tam Nakano.

It also would honor the late wrestling legend and founder of NJPW, Antonio Inoki.
