‘We Were Almost Background Characters’ – Released WWE Star Feels They Didn’t Get Enough Character Development

A released WWE star thinks he, along with some of his former stablemates, didn’t get enough of a chance to develop their characters.

In June 2024, the Wyatt Sicks debuted in WWE after months of cryptic teases and fan excitement.

The group consisted of two names who had close ties to the group’s namesake Bray Wyatt: brother Bo Dallas (Uncle Howdy) and former Wyatt Family member Erick Rowan, as well as Nikki Cross, Dexter Lumis and Joe Gacy.

After the group’s debut, WWE aired VHS tape style vignettes for Bo Dallas and Erick Rowan centered around Bray Wyatt’s passing, leading to some powerful performances from both.

While many assumed vignettes for the remaining members of the Wyatt Sicks would follow afterwards, they never did.

Speaking with TheFiveMarks, former Wyatt Sicks member Jospeh Sawyer (Joe Gacy) revealed that these vignettes were shot for himself, Dexter Lumis and Nikki Cross, but WWE opted not to use them – something Sawyer believes would have helped develop their characters and give them “a voice.”

Sawyer said:

“I realize that Bo was the center of the group and he obviously was the leader. I wish that we had a little bit more of a chance to develop individually ‘cause even when we had our VHS tapes, we all had different versions of what we had. Like Rowan had his long promo one which was great, very emotional, amazing. But then me, Dexter and Nikki all had promos that we shot that we talked, and they didn’t use it.

“So, I just feel like they specifically didn’t let, at least us three develop enough to the point where we can, on TV, have a sort of a voice. So to me, unfortunately at the time that was all going down, we were almost background characters.”

Sawyer would then discuss the group’s absence from TV during Bo Dallas’ injury-related hiatus from WWE, identifying the company’s decision to not have the rest of the group remain active as “the first misstep” with the group:

“I guess creative didn’t feel that we as characters were strong enough to carry the group without Bo in that moment, which was unfortunate because I feel like had we had the chance to develop a little bit more, that they could have had maybe a little bit more trust in us to carry things on while he was out. And then we could have gotten involved in something, then when he was ready to come back, boom, big return for Uncle Howdy, I think would have gotten a great reaction.

“I think unfortunately that was the first – I don’t know if I want to say mistake – but the first misstep with the group, was that just because one was out – which yeah, he’s the focal point but like I feel we could have easily booked around that. They kind of hit pause on us which sucked.

“Obviously we were worried about Bo, but we were also a little frustrated at the same time. But I think they were just trying to be extra careful considering what happened with Windham, they didn’t want to push Bo past any point that he couldn’t make. Which is understandable, I just wished early on they let us develop a little bit more individually so we can carry the group without him for a little bit if we needed to.”

Bo Dallas reportedly suffered a shoulder injury in December 2024, with the group being kept off television for the first six months of the following year before joining the SmackDown brand in June.
