Rey Mysterio has shared his honest thoughts on Dominik Mysterio’s early WWE career, admitting that he did feel there was some awkwardness prior to his heel turn.

Following several appearances for WWE, Dominik Mysterio made his pro-wrestling debut at SummerSlam 2020, losing to Seth Rollins in a Street Fight in his first-ever match.

Dominik wrestled alongside his father Rey Mysterio as a babyface following this match, with the duo notably winning the SmackDown Tag Team Championship in May 2021, ahead of Dominik turning heel and attacking Rey at Clash At The Castle in September 2022.

Speaking on The Undertaker’s Six Feet Under podcast, Rey Mysterio stated that he did feel that the best thing for Dominik was for him to stop teaming with his father, and for him to embrace the “Dirty Dom” character.

Recalling Dominik coming to him for advice when offered the Seth Rollins SummerSlam match, Rey stated:

“I did feel that there was a bit of awkwardness or even a bit of a struggle right before he became the person he became. He didn’t feel like he was fitting in by my side, and I completely understand that.

“So, the best thing for him to have done was to detach from his own father and then, on top of that, embrace the character that he I guess envisioned in his mind.

“I like telling this story because when it happened, that’s actually when I found out that ‘Ok, this kid he has his own confidence and eventually he’s going to ask me for advice down the road, but it’s just going to be to hear what I have to say but at the end, like anyone else he’s going to make his own decision.’

“During the pandemic is when he came up to me, he said ‘Hey pops, they want me to have a match against Seth.’ And I was like ‘Oooh, I don’t think you’re ready. What do you think?’ He goes ‘I don’t know.’

“I said ‘Man remember, I’m just gonna tell you this, you only have one shot to make it.’ Obviously we didn’t have fans in the crowd, you have the monitors and it was more reserved and private, but still, keep in mind that it’s one shot, make it or break it.

“He’s like ‘Ah, I’m gonna do it.’ And he did, so that kind of let me on to the character that he is now. He’s very very confident.”

It’s no secret that Dominik Mysterio’s career has flourished since leaving his father’s side, with many – including Big E – predicting that the current AAA Mega Champion will win a world championship on the main roster one day.

Allowing Dominik Mysterio to develop away from his father has allowed him to become a big star in his own right, a lesson worth remembering now that Aalyah Mysterio appears to be preparing to begin her own WWE career.
