John Cena Reacts To CM Punk Undisputed WWE Championship Win

John Cena may be retired, but that doesn’t mean he’s not aware of CM Punk becoming Undisputed WWE Champion, sharing his reaction online.

The July 6 episode of WWE Raw saw CM Punk make his return in the main event, facing Sami Zayn and defeating the star to become Undisputed WWE Champion.

With Punk now an eight-time world champion, John Cena reacted to the victory on Instagram with a throwback from July last year, which saw the Best in the World channel ‘Basic Thuganomics’.

As is often the case, Cena’s post featured no caption or supporting text, allowing fans to interpret what they were seeing in their own way.

Punk would go on to face Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship at last year’s Night of Champions, but be unsuccessful in that attempt.

Ahead of SummerSlam on August 1 & 2, Tommy Dreamer suggested that the dynamic had changed with CM Punk as the new Undisputed WWE Champion, alongside Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes and GUNTHER.

The Lasting Influence Of John Cena

CM Punk doesn’t need the “rub” from John Cena, but a shoutout from the legendary star still has impact, as was previously seen when he commented on Mason Rook’s WWE NXT debut.

For a star getting started on his WWE journey, Rook has seen additional praise from Cena, with the veteran clearly having an interest in the next generation.

That interest was manifest at December’s WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, which brought an end to John Cena’s in-ring career in a match against GUNTHER, but also showcased NXT stars facing their main roster counterparts. It’s something that fans can expect to see in the John Cena Classic, even if details of how that will work are still being worked upon.

Cena’s legacy in WWE is undeniable, as is his star status beyond the industry that made him famous, and to see that he continues to engage with the current product and where it will go in the future is a testament to the caliber of the record-setting world champion.

Still very much a part of the WWE ecosystem, Cena’s involvement will no doubt bring him out before the fans at future PLEs and other key events, allowing him to get up close to what’s taking place right across the product.
