The dynamic has changed going into SummerSlam with CM Punk becoming the Undisputed WWE Champion, according to a former star.
The July 6 episode of WWE Raw saw Cody Rhodes unable to challenge Sami Zayn for the championship, having been attacked by GUNTHER earlier in the show.
With the main event looming, it would be a returning CM Punk who would step into the ring against Zayn, going on to become the Undisputed WWE Champion.
Ahead of SummerSlam on August 1 & 2, former WWE star Tommy Dreamer has reflected on the dynamic between all four stars during a recent episode of Busted Open Radio, saying:
“I personally did not think Sami was leaving that building with the title, and I love the fact that CM Punk comes into his home town and he delivers.
“I sat and I was on the edge of my seat watching the entire match because it was so good. I’m waiting for GUNTHER to come and pull the ref. I’m waiting for interference, and, nope, CM Punk’s delivering his version of the Helluva Kick into a Go To Sleep, and we have a new champion.
“Where this takes us, I don’t know, but I’m along for the ride.
“Everybody has a valuable stake to get into that title picture at SummerSlam. Sami obviously is going to play Heel 101, ‘I was not prepared for my opponent.’
“GUNTHER is the one who does all the damage. Cody Rhodes: ‘I was not medically cleared. I was being tested for concussion.’
“CM Punk is now your champion, and it just totally changed the dynamic.”

Rhodes had secured a number one contender’s shot at the title on last week’s SmackDown, having defeated Jey Uso for the opportunity.
While Dreamer may be invested in what went down on WWE Raw, Kenta was less than happy seeing Punk use the GTS for the win.
This year’s SummerSlam covers two nights, with plenty of opportunity for the picture between all four players, “money” or otherwise, to be clarified in the run-up to the event and the show itself.

The Undisputed WWE Championship SummerSlam Situation
After just nine days, the Summer of Sami came to an end at the hands of the returning CM Punk, taking away a rematch from Night of Champions. Add to that GUNTHER’s ongoing fury against Rhodes, which saw the Ring General attack the star earlier on Raw, and it’s quite the picture going into SummerSlam.
Dreamer is right that the dynamic has shifted ahead of the August 1 & 2 WWE Premium Live Event, although it’s still disappointing that more wasn’t made of Zayn’s first run with the top title. Indeed, Becky Lynch has declared that Zayn was robbed on last night’s Raw.
It probably comes as little surprise that CM Punk returned on last night’s episode of Raw, recapturing a title he had won fifteen years previously, with Triple H noting it was the “same building” in his post-show pointy-finger post on Twitter. For that victory to come while all the drama plays out between Zayn, Rhodes and GUNTHER, however, is quite a shift in direction.
Exploring the title change in more detail, Dave Meltzer noted that Zayn is not seen as one of the “money players” in WWE.
