A former WWE star has declared that, when it comes to CM Punk winning the championship with an iconic move, it’s something he hates seeing.

The July 6 episode of WWE Raw saw CM Punk return in the main event, challenging and defeating Sami Zayn to become the Undisputed WWE Champion.

In the wake of the victory, Becky Lynch stated that Sami Zayn was “robbed“, while former WWE star Kenta had a different reaction to what went down.

Wth the victory coming from CM Punk’s execution of the Go 2 Sleep finisher, the originator of the move, former WWE star Kenta, spoke up, tweeting:

“I hate seeing this”

Kenta signed with WWE in 2014, having had a tryout earlier that year, and would remain with the company until his release in February 2019.

With both men sharing the Go To Sleep, Kenta has made his thoughts on Punk’s use of the move quite clear in previous comments.

The Move Made More Famous

Originated by Kenta, the “Go 2 Sleep” was arguably popularized by CM Punk thanks to his close association with wrestling the in the United States and the global reach that the product has.

It’s a move that has since been used, on occasion, by the likes of Logan Paul, Matt Riddle and Sammy Guevara, in variations on the theme, although is largely linked to Punk, despite its origins.

The origins of the move may not be widely acknowledged by WWE, although that is largely the case with the finisher of every star, yet knowing where it comes from becomes the sort of titbit that enthusiasts can effortlessly drop into conversation.

Despite past exchanges on the subject, Punk and Kenta would never cross paths in the ring, with the former parting ways with WWE while the latter was in NXT. Their paths would also not cross during their earlier times in Ring of Honor. Even 2021 wouldn’t see them in AEW at the same time, with Punk debuting in August of that year, after Kenta made his limited number of appearances.

Currently signed to Pro-Wrestling NOAH, it’s unlikely that Kenta and Punk will cross paths in Japan, despite WWE having a working relationship with the promotion that has seen a number of NXT stars compete, including Tavion Heights.

That said, there’s a chance Kenta wouldn’t pursue such an opportunity, having described his WWE run as ” the most frustrating days of my life” in comments made to Sports Illustrated back in 2020.
