Roman Reigns Defends WWE Universal Title Ahead Of SummerSlam 2023 WWE

Ahead of his showdown with cousin Jey Uso at SummerSlam, WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns put his title on the line in a rare house show appearance in Mexico City, Mexico.

The July 22 event from the Arena CDMX was headlined by the legendary Rey Mysterio who challenged for the Tribal Chief’s gold just two weeks away from Reigns’ scheduled defence against Jey Uso on August 5.

Unsurprisingly Roman came out on top in the bout, in what was not only his second title defence since WrestleMania 39 on April 2, where he defeated Cody Rhodes.

Despite also retaining his title at a June 17 live event in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Tribal Chief did recently have the unfortunate distinction of reaching over 100 days without a single televised title defence.

Roman’s inactivity with the title has drawn the ire of some fans, however, in that time the Bloodline story has seen great story development as well as massive success for the company.

On the other hand, Mysterio still has an excellent chance of capturing gold as he takes on fellow LWO member Santos Escobar on next weeks SmackDown (July 28) for a chance at Austin Theory’s United States Title.

Despite seeming like a match destined for the SummerSlam card, a recent update has now casted doubt on that, click here to find out more.
