Roman Reigns Original Plans For Royal Rumble 2024 WWE Title Match Revealed

Roman Reigns Original Plans For Royal Rumble 2024 WWE Title Match Revealed WWE

The original plan for Roman Reigns’ title defence at Royal Rumble 2024 has been revealed, with potential spoilers emerging for the currently scheduled match.

After Reigns interfered in the #1 contender’s match between Randy Orton, AJ Styles and LA Knight on the January 5 edition of SmackDown, Nick Aldis announced that Orton, Styles and Knight will challenge for the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship at this month’s Royal Rumble event.

While the current plan is for Roman Reigns to defend his gold in a four-way bout, it has now been reported that this wasn’t what was originally planned for January 27.

Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, a Roman Reigns vs Randy Orton singles match was the original idea WWE had for Royal Rumble.

Noting that WWE didn’t want to have Randy Orton definitively lose at Royal Rumble, Meltzer said:

“The actual deal here is that… the original idea was Roman (Reigns) and Randy Orton for the Rumble.

“Essentially there were parties involved who did not want to beat Randy Orton this early and just felt that there’s money to be made with Randy Orton and Roman in a program at some point, but it’s too soon to do it. But LA Knight just got beat and AJ (Styles) isn’t strong enough… I think AJ is the guy they probably would’ve wanted because Roman can beat him.

“The basic gist was that AJ gives them someone they can beat, LA gives them someone they can beat.”
