Royce Keys has recalled his Undisputed WWE Championship number one contender’s match with GUNTHER on the May 15 episode of SmackDown.
Following WWE WrestleMania 42, GUNTHER stepped up to Cody Rhodes to become his primary challenger for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
However, ahead of what would be their eventual one-on-one encounter for the gold at WWE Clash in Italy on May 31, an unexpected addition to the title picture presented himself in the form of Royce Keys.
During what was meant to be the contract signing for Rhodes and GUNTHER’s match in Turin, the Austrian began making demands of “The American Nightmare,” which resulted in Royce Keys swooping in and attempting to take the opportunity for himself.
The pair would then meet in a singles match later that night to determine who would face Cody at Clash in Italy, a match that GUNTHER won due to interference from Solo Sikoa and The MFTs.
At the time, Keys had only competed in four matches on SmackDown, making his inclusion in such a position a surprise, but the former AEW star proved he can carry himself just fine in the main event picture.
Speaking with Josh Hennig, Keys was asked whether the success he’s had in WWE thus far is something he can sit back and enjoy, or instead something that spurs him on to achieve even more, with Keys bringing up his flirting with the WWE Title last month.
He said:
“It’s more motivation, but I’m living in the moment as well. I think I have to do that.
“I think when I came out and told Cody I want to be the one that challenges him for the WWE Championship, I don’t think anyone expected that. It’s just taking advantage of any and every opportunity.
“It’s about making moments and what can I do to elevate myself even higher.”

Royce Keys “Past The Dream Part” Of WWE Run
Royce Keys’ journey to get to WWE has been filled with immense challenges and hurdles to overcome, something that has been well documented on WWE TV since he first arrived in the company.
But now that he has become a regular part of Friday Night SmackDown, he’s ready to seize every opportunity by showing the skills that helped him get to the biggest dance in pro wrestling.
Keys said:
“Every week it’s rewarding for me. I figured we’re past the dream part. I just hit six months here right? So, we’re past the dream now, it’s time to just keep working even 10 times harder, put the same effort in things that got me here.
“It’s putting everything into overdrive, delivering every time I’m on that screen. Every week is different for me, I got goosebumps right now talking about it because it took me a long time to get here. Any time I’m on that screen I got to put my stamp down. So (I) just got to put 10 toes down and just go.”
