AEW Had ‘Plan B’ Finish Prepared For Sting Retirement Match AEW

AEW reportedly had a “Plan B” finish prepared for Sting’s final match at AEW Revolution 2024, if a specific scenario played out.

AEW Revolution’s main event match between Sting & Darby Allin and The Young Bucks was a spectacle, and a fitting conclusion to The Icon’s 40-year wrestling career.

While the focus was rightfully on The Stinger, undoubtedly the most memorable spot of the match came courtesy of Sting’s protege Darby Allin, who launched himself off a 15ft ladder down through a pane of glass and through an assortment of chairs.

The spot required Allin to receive 12 stitches afterwards and was yet another testament of the 31-year-old’s incredible fortitude.

Thankfully Allin continued the match and played a key role in its finish, however, according to a new article from Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso AEW had a contingency plan if Allin could not continue following the spot.

Barrasso noted the following regarding the spot and what AEW’s plan was had he been unable to continue the match:

Multiple people confirmed, that was the one spot Darby wanted above all. There was a Plan B with a different finish in the event he could not return to the match, which turned out to be no more than a precaution.

Once it was determined that Darby would make the jump, safety measures were applied. A rehearsal occurred earlier than usual in the day, and a stunt coordinator instructed how to place the items and reviewed the proper protocols.

There were also nearby doctors anticipating the spot, and they were on high alert. And had Darby not been able to return to the match, the Bucks were prepared to call an alternate finish.

As Allin revealed at the AEW Revolution media scrum, he is set for a hiatus from the ring in the near future, but not for any rest or recuperation – instead, Allin will be setting off to climb Mount Everest.

In other news related to Sting’s final match, the Hall of Famer’s two sons Garrett and Steven have provided their first comments since playing a key role at Revolution – sharing not before known details on the match.
