Gunther has named Sami Zayn as the special referee for his Undisputed WWE Championship rematch with Cody Rhodes.
At WWE Clash In Italy, Cody Rhodes retained his Undisputed WWE Championship against Gunther in the opening match of the show, though there was some controversy surrounding the finish.
Gunther’s foot was under the bottom rope as he was pinned by Cody, which led to Gunther demanding a rematch on last week’s SmackDown, with Nick Aldis agreeing to allow Gunther to pick the stipulation.
Sami Zayn To Be Special Guest Referee For Cody Rhodes Vs. Gunther Rematch
On tonight’s SmackDown, Sami Zayn called Cody to the ring for a face to face, with Sami demanding Cody be honest with him, which led to a tense exchange between the two.
Cody would tell Sami that he had changed from the man he used to be, and that he would never be WWE Champion, which led to Sami slapping Cody, and Cody slapping Sami back.
Later in the night, Gunther would approach Nick Aldis backstage, where he revealed that he wants Sami Zayn to be the special referee for the rematch with Cody next week on SmackDown.
WWE In Danger Of Squandering GUNTHER’s “Career Killer” Momentum With Second-Straight Cody Rhodes Loss
While a first-time rivalry with Roman Reigns was appealing, few would argue that GUNTHER’s move from Raw to SmackDown post-WrestleMania 42 was not for the best after three years on the red brand.
What was not for the best however, was the tepid manner in which GUNTHER lost his first major championship match on the blue brand to Cody Rhodes at last month’s Clash in Italy, with the referee counting the three off a single Cross Rhodes, despite GUNTHER’s foot (kind of) being under the ropes at the time.
This, in theory was done to protect GUNTHER, and the inclusion of Sami Zayn in the WWE Title picture could be another way the company could prevent “The Ring General” from taking a clean loss to Cody, with Zayn likely to get involved in Cody and GUNTHER’s rematch next week on SmackDown.
Even if he doesn’t take a clean pin in his and Cody’s rematch, or a potential three-way with Zayn that could follow it, another loss is another loss, and for a man that retired John Cena and AJ Styles in the span of seven weeks just six months ago, he really shouldn’t be put in that position.
With the returns of Randy Orton, Drew McIntyre and CM Punk reportedly nearing however, it’s also difficult to imagine GUNTHER defending that Undisputed WWE Title at SummerSlam rather than Cody Rhodes, so WWE may have shot themselves in the foot by putting the Austrian in a feud with Rhodes if they had no intention of putting the gold around his waist.
