Tony Khan Calls Recent AEW Spell The ‘Most Challenging’ Of His Career AEW

AEW President Tony Khan has named a particularly challenging recent spell in the company as the “most challenging” of his career in any sport.

Speaking at the Forbidden Door media call ahead of the event on June 25, Khan reflected on the year prior’s inaugural event and the difficulty in building it due to the extent of injuries plaguing the roster at the time.

Khan stated that even in his extensive time in management of sports franchises Fulham and the Jacksonville Jaguars, the sheer volume of injuries was nothing he had dealt with before.

Recalling the build to Forbidden Door 2022 when the likes of Bryan Danielson and CM Punk were unable to compete, Khan explained:

“This year, thankfully, knock on wood, we are not as injury bitten as we were last year at this time. Last year was the most challenging run of injuries that I’ve ever been through in any sport.

“This is my 12th year in the NFL, I’ve spent seven years as the director of Football with Fulham and now with AEW for four years, never have I seen anything like what happened last year between Double or Nothing and Forbidden Door in terms of huge stars getting injury in all different kind of ways.

“The injury bug truly hit us hard.

Thankfully for Khan aside from reports of Bryan Danielson being ‘banged up’ ahead of his dream match with Kazuchika Okada, there haven’t been many injury concerns.

It has been speculated however that there were plans for Mercedes Mone to face Toni Storm at the event prior to Mone’s injury, although this was never truly built up in any fashion or confirmed to ever be actually happening.

Even more matches were added to the Forbidden Door on AEW Collision (June 24) with several major NJPW talents making their way onto the card at the last minute, to find out more follow this link here.
