WWE US Champion Trick Williams has explained how his on-screen alliance with hip-hop artist Lil Yachty came to be, confirming that he is training with the star.

Ahead of WrestleMania 42, Lil Yachty accompanied Trick Williams during appearances on SmackDown, ahead of Williams challenging for Sami Zayn’s US Championship.

Yachty’s distraction played a role in Williams defeating Sami Zayn on April 19, with the musician having accompanied Trick Williams for several more on-screen appearances.

Speaking with Travis Singleton/SneakerReporter, Trick Williams revealed that it was Lil Yachty who pushed for more substantial appearances, and didn’t want just a one-off WWE outing.

Stating that he had a training session with Yachty booked in for shortly after that interview, Williams said:

“Yachty, man, he’s a guy who obviously loves the business. He doesn’t necessarily need to do everything that he’s doing because he’s had and is having a very successful hip-hop career, movies, everything like that.

“The truth is, he just loves the business. That’s why he has came to all the shows for years now. Opportunity came before WrestleMania, they wanted to get him involved in some way.

“They said ‘How would you feel about walking out with Trick?’ They asked him and they asked me. I thought it was dope, he thought it was dope, but he was like ‘Man, if we’re gonna do this, I don’t want it to be a one week type thing. I want to have some real storyline going into this. Let’s make this a moment instead of a random one-off.’

“He has been locked in ever since. Shoot, we’ve got training in about an hour, we make sure that he’s getting active, he’s getting the full experience of being a superstar here with us.

“That’s my boy, man, inside the ring, outside the ring. I probably spend more time with Yachty than most other people who are in the business who are my co-workers.”

Celebrity involvement in wrestling is hardly a new concept, with the very first WrestleMania event back in 1985 featuring a number of mainstream names, including Mr T, who teamed with Hulk Hogan to defeat Paul Orndorff and Roddy Piper in the main event.

The current era of celebrities in wrestling is refreshing, because so many stars are passionate about the product, gone are the days of half-hearted appearances where famous stars only show up to promote X, Y, and maybe even Z.

The likes of Logan Paul, Jelly Roll and Bad Bunny have earned the respect of fans by giving it 110% when stepping into the ring, and it looks like Lil Yachty will be the next celebrity to make his debut.

Yachty previously stated that his goal is to eventually “try whooping some ass” in a WWE ring, so it seems like it’s only a matter of time until we see him make his entrance for a match of his own.
