If there is one thing that Tony Khan’s booking in AEW has become known for, it’s major announcements.
However, if there is a second thing it has become known for, it’s tournaments, with many Championship Eliminator Tournaments taking place in the company’s history.
Next month, AEW is set to hold the second annual Owen Hart Cup Tournaments, but there is still one other kind of tournament that Tony is hoping to book.
Speaking on the Pacific Rim podcast, Tony discussed the idea of potentially running a ‘G1 Style’ round robin tournament in AEW, saying it’s something that he is interested in.
He said:
“There are single elimination tournaments in AEW. We’ve never done a round robin tournament. It’s something I am interested in, but certainly, the G1 is an industry leader there when it comes to being the preeminent round robin tournament in pro wrestling. We participate in the G1. We’ve sent people in the past. With Eddie Kingston being part of G1 and Wheeler Yuta competing in Super Juniors, it gives us great opportunities to have top stars from AEW that we believe in, represent AEW in Japan.”
Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs are the two names confirmed so far to be participating in the Owen Hart Cup.
