Update On WWE Reportedly Turning Down CM Punk Return

Update On WWE Reportedly Turning Down CM Punk Return AEW, WWE

A new update has provided more information on WWE’s reported decision to reject the chance to sign former AEW star CM Punk.

Following numerous reports of Punk and WWE being ‘in talks’ over a potential return to the company, it was reported earlier this week by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE had in fact turned Punk down at this time.

Now, adding to this report in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer provided some extra context on the decision-making process and whether there was any chance WWE’s stance could change in the future.

Meltzer wrote:

The stuff with C.M. Punk is a no for right now. It could change, but it’s doubtful it will any time soon unless business goes down or there is a huge public outcry for him that hasn’t happened.

It’s a Vince McMahon call and the others in charge are Levesque and Nick Khan, but in the end they are doing what Vince McMahon wants.

It was strong enough that company officials would be willing to say that they have no interest at this point and talks are dead right now . But I was also told not to close the door completely on it because it’s wrestling.

Even before the reports suggested as such, many fans had been led to believe a Punk return could be happening based off suspected teases on WWE programming made by WWE stars and commentators.

This included one on the most recent episode of Monday Night Raw (October 9) when Shinsuke Nakamura hit a GTS on Ricochet.

On the teases and whether there was any merit to them, Meltzer wrote:

The teases that have been out there like Nakamura doing the GTS are not an indication he’s coming back.

As indicated by Meltzer, WWE are riding high with success in almost every conceivable metric right now, hot off the back of another record-breaking Premium Live Event in Fastlane and NXT handily drawing more viewers than AEW Dynamite when the two went head-to-head on October 10.
