AEW star Wardlow has explained his reaction to an infamous moment in his feud with MJF in the lead up to Double Or Nothing 2022.
The moment saw Wardlow take several lashes from MJF as part of the condition to face his former employer at Double or Nothing.
Wardlow smiled while receiving the beating, cementing his status as a monster in the company.
Speaking to Joel Pearl of Fightful, Wardlow discussed the moment, and how him smiling after MJF whipped him for the first time was his genuine reaction to the moment.
He said:
“To be 100% honest, I was really dreading that. Obviously, being whipped with a belt, it’s kind of hard to go into that thinking positively.
“The adrenaline from the crowd is something you really can’t explain until you felt it. When he smacked me that first time, in my head, I’m like, ‘Gosh, this is gonna suck.’ Then he did it, and I was like, ‘that was it?’
“That smile on my face was genuine because it was me going, ‘Oh, this is easy, keep them coming.’ It wasn’t too bad. Thank God for adrenaline,” he said. “I had some red marks, but I have thick skin, maybe.”
Wardlow is the current AEW TNT Champion in his first reign, while MJF won the Casino Battle Royale at AEW All Out 2022 to guarantee him an upcoming match for the AEW World Championship.
Wardlow seems set for a collision with Powerhouse Hobbs for the TNT Championship soon, potentially at AEW Full Gear.
