Will Ospreay Championship Plans Revealed

Will Ospreay Championship Plans Revealed AEW

Details have emerged on championship plans involving Will Ospreay, following uncertainty surrounding the status of the IWGP US/UK Title.

During his IWGP US Championship reign, Will Ospreay introduced a new title belt and referred to himself as the IWGP UK Champion.

Following Ospreay’s title defence against Shota Umino at the November 4 Power Struggle event, David Finlay destroyed both the original US, and UK title belts.

NJPW chairman Naoki Sugabayashi has now confirmed that a new title will be introduced in the place of the IWGP US Championship.

Speaking in a press conference on Monday (November 6), he said:

Regarding the IWGP US belt, we will establish a new championship. It is true that fans were confused as to whether it was IWGP US or UK, so we have created a new championship. We will announce the details later.

NJPW previously confirmed that Ospreay would be defending his gold against David Finlay and AEW’s Jon Moxley at Wrestle Kingdom 18 in January, which would suggest that this three-way bout will now be for the new title.

Ospreay won the IWGP US Title from Kenny Omega at the June 25 AEW X NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view.

There has been a lot of speculation about Ospreay’s future, with him recently indicating that he plans to leave NJPW when his current contract expires in February 2024.
