AEW’s William Regal has noted that he asked former WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon for his blessing to use his current ring name.
William Regal, real name Darren Matthews, was released from his WWE contract in January, ending his 22-year tenure with the company.
Regal had previously wrestled as ‘Steven Regal’, but began using the ‘William’ forename in September 2000.
The popular star is still goes by William Regal in AEW, following his debut for the promotion at the Revolution pay-per-view in March.
During a K & S WrestleFest virtual signing, Regal confirmed that he owns the name, but was prepared to stop using it if Vince McMahon wanted him to.
Regal said:
“I own William Regal but if Mr. McMahon asked me not to use it, I wouldn’t use it… I’d be just Steven Regal.
“He gave me his blessing. No problems with me and Mr. McMahon at all.”
Regal is currently prominently featured on AEW, notably turning on Jon Moxley during the AEW World Championship bout at Full Gear.
During the November 19 pay-per-view, Regal handed challenger MJF some brass knuckles, leading to MJF defeating Moxley for the gold.
An update has emerged on Regal’s AEW contract, following speculation that he will soon return to WWE.
