WWE considered calling off a match at SummerSlam 2026 due to a former champion sustaining an injury.

WWE SummerSlam Night One (August 1) saw the reunion of The Bella Twins, with Nikki & Brie competing together for the first time since Nikki suffered a broken ankle back in March.

Teaming with Paige against the trio of Fallon Henley, Lainey Reid and Jacy Jayne, it was the younger stars who toppled the veterans, as Fatal Influence continued their positive momentum.

While headlines were initially grabbed by Nikki and Brie’s heel turn on Paige after the bell, it was evident during that attack – and for much of the match – that Brie was dealing with an injury to her right shoulder.

Two days later on August 3 – after both Triple H and Nikki Bella had prepared fans for the worst – Brie took to social media to confirm that she had suffered a broken scapula (shoulder blade), and would be out of action for “a bit.”

In a new video uploaded to the Nikki And Brie YouTube channel, Nikki and Brie shared a conversation not long after Brie suffered the injury, and before there was any official medical diagnosis.

The twins first discussed their misfortune with their WWE reunion, as Brie is forced onto the shelf immediately after Nikki returned from her own injury:

Brie: “What’s the universe trying to tell us?”

Nikki: “I know, what is up? How wild. They don’t want both Bellas. It’s crazy because you come back and then I break my ankle. I come back you break your shoulder.”

Brie would then reveal that WWE were considering calling off the match due to her injury, but she insisted that she continue and let her sister Nikki come in off the “hot tag”:

Brie:”What’s even crazier – that some of the girls were talking about is – when you broke your ankle, you continued the match, and then I broke my shoulder – and it’s so funny cos we’re people pleasers, but the whole time in my head I’m like ‘No, I gotta stay in so Nikki can get the hot tag.’

“They were telling me ‘Stay down,’ they were thinking about calling the match, and I’m like ‘No, no, no.’ Even though I was crazy pain, all I could think about was ‘Nikki gotta hit that comeback.’”

Nikki: “It’s crazy how we both did finish matches with really bad breaks, and with multiple breaks. Wild that you did that s**t with multiple breaks in your shoulder.”

Brie: “I could feel it.”

Nikki then spoke about when she realized the severity of the injury during the match, with Brie admitting that she “felt bad” for everyone else involved in the match due to fears her injury would impact the quality of the action:

Nikki:”I didn’t see you not hit the missile dropkick because I was selling, and so I would have immediately known. But the minute you came over to me and you’re like ‘I can’t grab Lainey’ I was like ‘Oh s**t.’ “

Brie:”I didn’t do the missile drop kick, I didn’t do the backdrop. You have to think I broke my right shoulder. My right’s my strength, so in the match I have to throw forearms with my left.

“In my head I go ‘I feel bad, I feel like I’m the weakest link right now and making everything look sloppy because I was injured.’ But what else could I do?

While fans will be expecting that Nikki may continue her feud The Bella Twins’ feud with Paige on her own, the former two-time WWE Divas Champion admitted that part of her is considering waiting until Brie makes her return.

Nikki: “I don’t want to do it alone. A part of me feels like I just need to stay back with you and just wait for us to come back in together. It’s already been a one and a one. I just don’t want to do this again without you.”

The end of the video saw time fast forward to Brie at home in her bed, where she shared an update on her recovery and sent a message of thanks to the fans for their well-wishes.

Brie said:

“I made it back home and it feels so good to be back in my bed. I have my little fur babies with me and of course my babies and my husband. Everyone’s helping me and being so great.

“Like I said in my post, I’ve been seeing all your warm wishes, your prayers, all the positive vibes sent my way and I appreciate that. So thank you so much.

“Here we go, we’re gonna relax for a couple weeks then start some PT and get the ball going. I love you so much and I’ll keep you updated.”
