Roman Reigns WWE World Heavyweight Championship Plans Update

WWE has announced a tournament to determine Roman Reigns’ next World Heavyweight Championship challenger, ahead of an upcoming international show.

Following Roman Reigns defending his gold against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, the OTC was approached backstage by Rey Mysterio on the August 3 edition of Raw.

With rumors swirling about the two stars’ conversation Mysterio has officially revealed his and Reigns’ plans to determine a future title challenger.

In an official announcement video – which you can watch below this news story – Rey Mysterio announced what is being pushed as a “historic tournament” featuring the best luchadores from Raw, SmackDown and AAA.

The winner of this tournament will challenge for Roman Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship on the September 14 edition of Raw, which will emanate from Mexico City.

Roman Reigns won the World Heavyweight Championship from CM Punk at in the main event of WrestleMania 42 night two.

Over the past 100 days, Reigns has defended the gold on three occasions, against two challengers.

Ahead of his recent SummerSlam title defense against Seth Rollins, Reigns retained his gold against Jacob Fatu at Backlash in May, before defeating Fatu again in a Tribal Combat match where the title was also on the line at that same month’s Clash in Italy PLE.

While LA Knight would be an obvious future title challenger for Roman Reigns following their confrontation on the August 3 Raw episode, it seems unlikely that he will be involved in this tournament.

Rey Mysterio – and WWE’s social media posts – emphasise that it will be luchadores competing in the tournament, indicating that the tournament lineup will solely be made up of masked or Latin American heritage wrestlers.

While an official bracket hasn’t been revealed, the announcement video included clips of Penta, La Parka, Aero Star, El Hijo Del Dr Wagner Jr, Dragon Lee, Rey Fenix, Psycho Clown and Laredo Kid.

September will be a big month for AAA, with Triplemania 34 to take place across two nights and locations, with the September 11 show recently moved to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and the September 13 event to emanate from the CDMX in Mexico City, one day before WWE Raw takes over the arena.
