Having shared a less-than-stellar relationship when Goldberg first came to WWE, the retired star has now shared his thoughts on Triple H.

WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in July of last year saw Goldberg compete for one last time, challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship and losing to GUNTHER.

A legendary WCW star prior to signing with WWE in March 2003, Goldberg only spent a year in WWE before eventually heading back to the company for a lengthier run in 2016, where he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame two years later.

A World Heavyweight Champion and two-time Universal Champion, Golberg had a fractious relationship with Triple H when he arrived in WWE, a topic he would revisit on Going Ringside, sharing an insight into their past and current relationship, saying:

“Oh, it was different at the time because he and I couldn’t stand each other, really. And we were both represented by the same agent, and we had had a confrontation prior to me going to the WWE, and then, oh, by the way, he’s married to Vince McMahon’s daughter.

“So, I mean, it was kind of like me walking into an unwinnable situation. But I think business prevailed, and truthfully, at the end of the day, he’s a good guy.”

Goldberg had previously stated that a conversation with Triple H was instrumental in kick-starting the plans for his retirement match.

The Times They Are A’Changin’

As Goldberg suggests, there was a different between the Triple H that he met during his first run in WWE and towards the end of his in-ring career.

A full-time competitor in 2003, Triple H was part of a WWE that was, at the time, around two years out from buying its major competition, in the form of WCW, with many stars of the Turner-owned company joining the McMahon-led product. There was, no doubt, a sense of caution when it came to the influx of WCW stars, even if Goldberg wasn’t among that initial cohort.

By the time Goldberg had returned to WWE in 2016, Triple H was heading into the sunset of his in-ring career, although still prominently featured on screen. Clearly heading for an executive role, it would be a heart condition discovered in late 2021 that would lead to the star’s wrestling career coming to an end and a re-focus on the corporate future that he now fully embraces.

Triple H has long been a showman and considered a great mind in the wrestling business; after all, he has gone by the name “The Game” for much of his later career. It’s no doubt the business mind that came into play when negotiating with Goldberg, taking away any of the animosity they may have had in their early days, echoing the “Best for Business” mantra of the on-screen persona of his real-life wife Stephanie McMahon.

While Goldberg may consider Triple H to be “a good guy”, the same cannot be said of MVP’s feelings towards the WWE name.
