WWE Hall of Famer Barry Darsow (Demolition Smash) has commented on the New Day’s WWE departure, and him being shocked by the news.

Back in 2016, the New Day became the longest reigning WWE Tag Team Champions in history, taking the record from now-WWE Hall of Famers Ax and Smash of Demolition, a record that stood for 30 years.

While the New Day’s record would eventually be broken by the Usos in 2022, the New Day have gone on to become 12-time tag team champions.

Back in May, it was reported that both Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods had departed the company, with them said to have been offered pay cuts by the company and rejecting the offer.

Speaking on Wrestling Life Online, Barry Darsow (Demolition Smash) was asked his thoughts on the New Day’s departure, with him noting he was shocked by the news, as he thought the company would never get rid of the pair.

He said:

“I heard the news, and I don’t know the inside thing or what goes on, how much money they were making, how much WWE has to cut, I don’t know all that stuff.

“But as I watch it, those guys would be the guys I wouldn’t think they’d get rid of, because they’re so talented, and what they’ve done in their careers there is so big, you can have them do anything, and you don’t have to recreate the wheel with new guys, and I’m sure they’re the kind of guys that would do anything they want them to do.

“It was a shock when I saw that, but they left on their own terms. They were gonna take a cut in pay and said ‘nah lets just go’. Back in our day, we didn’t make that amount of money, so if they’ve been working their for that company for how many years, and if they’re gonna take that cut in pay, which was probably way more than we made in our careers, they’ve got a lot of money in the bank.”

The New Day’s Legacy Following WWE Departure

With the New Day’s 11 year run in WWE now over, they will undoubtedly go down as one of the best teams in the history of the company, and arguably the best team of their generation.

In the past decade, the debate would come down to solely the New Day or the Usos as to who the greatest tag team is, with names such as the Hardy Boyz, Edge & Christian, Demolition, the Legion of Doom and others entering the conversation for all-time teams.

For what it’s worth, WWE themselves named the New Day the greatest team of all time in a countdown several years ago.
