Clarification On AEW’s Interest In Popular WWE Hall Of Famer WWE

A clarification has emerged on the conversations between AEW and a popular WWE Hall of Famer following comments from Billy Gunn.

In a recent podcast appearance, Billy Gunn revealed that AEW had previously had conversations with Sean Waltman (X-Pac) with the hope that he would come into the company.

The time frame for those conversations, along with details on how far the talks went, have now been revealed by Dave Meltzer.

Speaking on the subject during Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer stated:

“Billy Gunn did an interview and he mentioned about talks with Sean Waltman, and they did exist, but it was last year. It’s not like it’s something current.

“He was last talked to in October, and he was talked to once before, in May and October of last year. So that’s the extent of it.”

Meltzer would go on to discuss the talks between between AEW and Waltman in more depth, saying:

“They could call again, but it’s not like it’s something that’s been currently talked about or anything like that.

“It’s something that did happen, we didn’t even hear about at the time, never got very far – it was never like it was on paper or anything like that.

“It was just at different points there was an idea that may have been for him to just… and they would have been just singular appearances like people sometimes make on AEW television. It wasn’t for a full-time deal or anything like that. It was just something maybe to play off Billy Gunn and the Acclaimed or something.

“Right now, nothing to anything. Obviously, with a phone call it could change, but hasn’t been any talk since October in that direction.”

Waltman was a fundamental part of D-Generation X in WWE and the nWo in WCW, with Eric Bischoff crediting Waltman for his importance to the WCW’s initial dominance.

Although he retired from in-ring completion in July 2019, he did have a match in February 2022 at Game Changer Wrestling’s Welcome to Heartbreak as Joey Janela’s tag team partner.

He would follow this up with a match at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 6 where he would lose to Janela.

Waltman is a two-time WWE Hall of Famer as part of the Class of 2019 for D-Generation X and the Class of 2020 for his membership of the nWo.
